Sega hasn’t updated the Virtua Fighter franchise in a long time. While there will be no new entries in the fighting game franchise (though perhaps they should), the series will make a brief return on Steam this winter.
Sega announced on X Friday that Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O, an improved version of the 3D fighter Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, is now available for wishlisting on Steam.
More information will be released at a later date, but for the time being, we know that it will be playable in 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second, will feature gameplay balance tweaks, upgraded visuals, and, best of all for fighting game fans, rollback netcode, ensuring that there will be no latency regardless of platform. It will also include new online modes in which up to 16 players can compete.
Virtua Fighter is one of those arcade fighting game franchises that gets less attention than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. There were five main entries, the last of which, Virtua Fighter 5, was released in 2006. It has been re-released several times since then, with Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown arriving in 2021 with new music and graphics on PlayStation 4.
That means you can still play Virtua Fighter 5 if you have a PlayStation Network account, and it remains one of the best fighting games on the PS5. R.E.V.O is essentially a PC port of this version, with more modern features.
Sega isn’t giving up on Ultimate Showdown, however. Gematsu says that Ultimate Showdown will receive a 2.0 balancing upgrade when R.E.V.O is released.
If that’s not enough for Virtua Fighter lovers, it’s worth noting that Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Yakuza 6 have a fairly complete version of Virtua Fighter 5. Virtua Fighter 2 is also available on Steam for only $1.
