An Indiana mother has been sentenced to probation after her six-month-old son was seriously hurt in a rat assault at their house.
Angel Schonabaum, 29, pleaded guilty to one count of neglect of a dependent and will not face extra prison time.
According to WRTV, Schonabaum was given credit for one year served, and the remainder of his sentence was postponed to probation.
The events preceding the tragedy featured an infant who was described as a “near fatal event” by medics, with treatment including a blood transfusion. He was covered in over 50 rat bites and had injuries so severe that revealed bones on his fingertips.
As a result of the infant’s poor condition, the mother has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and comply with any suggested therapy, according to Law and Crime.
Angel’s husband, David Schonabaum, was found guilty in September of three counts of child neglect and sentenced to 16 years in jail.
The pair, along with Angel Schonabaum’s sister, Delaina Thurman, were arrested after David contacted 911 to report his son’s health, and officials discovered the toddler bloodied, according to CrimeOnline.
