Is Nothing About to Build Its Own OS? CEO Hints at New Vision for Smartphone Software

Most mobile phone firms prefer to utilize Android, which has its distinct interface and functionality. Huawei defied the norm by producing Harmony OS, yet it was necessary owing to geopolitical constraints. Despite its considerable resources, Huawei has faced significant obstacles in developing an alternative to Android.

Other phone operating systems, such as Windows Phone and webOS, have also become obsolete.

Nothing, a smartphone manufacturer known for breaking market standards, is considering developing its own operating system from scratch, according to Techcrunch. During Techcrunch Disrupt 2024, Nothing’s founder and CEO, Carl Pei, confirmed that the company is looking into the possibility of a proprietary Nothing OS.

Pei criticized Google and Apple’s duopoly. “We’re considering our options and exploring the possibility of creating something unique.” “Some kind of operating system,” he explained. The goal would be to both increase Nothing’s effect on the industry and provide a new revenue stream.

Pei pointed out that a proprietary operating system would not only provide the corporation more control over the user experience, but it would also be more profitable than hardware, which is expensive and risky. It already has an unusual skin for its Android phones (see above), dubbed ‘Nothing OS’.

He added that the advancement of AI technology has made it easier to construct operating systems today and that nothing can improve the user experience more than the technical fundamentals such as device drivers and core components.
