INDIANAPOLIS – State police are investigating a fatal, fiery crash on I-65 in downtown Indianapolis Friday morning.
Police said the incident happened around 1 a.m. on I-65 northbound, between Meridian and MLK streets.
Police said dispatchers received a 911 call from someone inside a stalled car on the road. Police reported that while on the phone, the vehicle was struck from behind by another motorist.
After the incident, the second car spun into the path of a northbound semi-truck. The truck and car collided, resulting in a fire.
According to police, the driver of the semi was able to get out and was not critically harmed. The car’s driver was trapped and died at the site.
Investigators are unsure what caused the car to become crippled, but a malfunction caused the vehicle to shut down and none of the lights to work, leaving it stopped with no lights. The driver of the stranded vehicle was not gravely hurt.
