Alaska Man Charged With Murdering Two Teenage Girls in Stabbing Incident After Argument Escalates

Alaska guy accused of fatally murdering two teenage females.

Shaquille Carawan, 20, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder in the October 2 killings of Novely Rivers and Abigail Olson, both 18. Carawan is also charged with tampering with physical evidence and providing or delivering alcoholic beverages to those under the age of 21.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, the attack occurred after “an argument escalated into a physical altercation,” according to Alaska Department of Public Safety spokesperson Austin McDaniel.

McDaniel told the Daily News that Carawan and Rivers were cousins.

According to a police affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, cops were dispatched to Rivers’ home in Hooper Bay following a report of two “unresponsive females.”

Rivers and Olson’s remains were located on the site by authorities.

The affidavit states that both juveniles were stabbed many times and suffered blunt-force trauma. According to police, phone records suggest that Novely and Carawan exchanged text messages before the deaths.

According to the affidavit, Carawan texted that he planned to bring over marijuana and a torch for smoking, as well as “made home brew at his house and would also bring that over to her house to drink,” “The conversation continues until he arrives and says, ‘I’m by the porch now,’ and no texts follow.”

Investigators discovered bloodstained shoes “under Carawan’s sleeping area with tread patterns that matched unique bloodstained tread patterns found on the scene,” according to the affidavit.

Investigators also discovered a blue Cuisinart knife with a damaged tip tucked between the refrigerator and the wall. The knife allegedly matched “the color of the sheath located at the incident location,” according to the affidavit.

During an interview, Carawan originally denied any involvement in the murders, but “later confessed to killing both victims with the blue knife and explained the event in full detail.”

“Carawan admitted to taking both victim’s phones and said that he threw them in a lake while he was running back to his house after the incident,” according to the summons. The phones were eventually found, according to authorities.

According to the affidavit, Carawan allegedly acknowledged putting his bleeding clothes in a plastic bag with weights and throwing them into the river. He further informed investigators that he cleaned the murder weapon at home and concealed it between the refrigerator and the wall.

Police said they discovered a bag of bloody garments in the steam bath at his residence. “Clothing located in the bag matched clothing that investigators had previously observed Carawan wearing in photos on his Facebook.”

Alaska Public Media reports that a hearing has been planned for October 17.
