Texas president Gregory L. Fenves and Texas A&M president Michael K. Young each have expressed interest in renewing the football rivalry between their respective schools.
The two university presidents spent time with the Austin American Statesman and talked about the possibility of the series continuing.
“It’s a storied rivalry of a hundred years or so,” Fenves said. “We’re supportive” of renewing it.
Young said, “Absolutely. We have been from Day One,” since A&M joined the Southeastern Conference.
Added Fenves, “We’ve told our ADs (athletic directors) to figure out a plan and bring it to us.”
One of the complications is the way the the Big 12 Conference, of which Texas is a member, schedules their nonconference football games. Texas has their nonconference opponents scheduled 10 years in advance and the nonconference foes are played at the beginning of the year. For SEC schools like Texas A&M, nonconference gmaes are played throughout the season.
While it may be longer than anticipated, there could be optimism on the horizon for fans who want to see the Lone Star Showdown return.
