Sumter County Crash Leaves One Dead and Two Hospitalized, Investigation Ongoing

The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that one individual died a week after a crash on a Midlands route that wounded two others.

Cpl. Nick Pye reported the death on Saturday.

Pye said the single-vehicle crash occurred on November 13 in Sumter County.

According to Pye, at 8:15 a.m. on Nov. 13, a 2006 Honda car was going east on Queen Chapel Road when it drove off the left side near the intersection with Ebenezer Road. According to Pye, the Honda collided with a tree before hitting a fence.

According to Pye, the Honda carried two passengers in addition to the driver, all of whom were hospitalized. Pye reported that the passenger in the back seat later died.

The Sumter County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the deceased passenger. There was no further information available about the driver’s or surviving passenger’s conditions.

There was no information on whether anyone in the automobile was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the car’s deviation off the road was unknown, but the Highway Patrol is still investigating the collision.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, at least 846 people died on South Carolina roads in 2024 as of Nov. 17. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, 1,030 persons were killed in collisions last year.

According to DPS records, at least 18 persons were killed in collisions in Sumter County in 2024. DPS recorded 30 deaths in the county in 2023.
