Oklahoma Storms and Tornadoes Injure 11, Leave Thousands Without Power

Severe storms and reported tornadoes hit Oklahoma early Sunday, inflicting injuries and significant power disruptions, according to officials.

A damaging line of severe weather caused devastation in the Oklahoma City area, where at least 11 individuals were sent to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Oklahoma City officials.

Littlejohn stated that the damage included downed power lines, gas lines, trees, as well as traffic lights and signs. Local television reports depicted flipped cars, felled trees and power lines, and damaged residences.

A tornado at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City destroyed at least one property, and flooding closed a portion of an interstate route in the region, according to CBS News affiliate KWTV.

According to the city, 39 structures were demolished, 43 sustained significant damage, and 54 had moderate damage.

According to PowerOutage.us, over 13,000 consumers in the state remained without power as of Sunday night, a decrease from roughly 95,000 earlier in the day.

On Sunday morning, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for sections of Oklahoma and Texas that expired at 9 a.m. Central time.

A social media post from the agency’s Norman, Oklahoma, office soon before 1:30 a.m. described a severe thunderstorm with a tornado moving through eastern Oklahoma City toward Midwest City and Tinker Air Force Base.

The post stated, “If you’re in the path of this storm, take cover immediately!”
