No. 7 Texas wins series 7-3 over No. 23 TCU

Stanford beats Texas 8-3

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 7 Texas Baseball won the series against No. 23 TCU with 7-3 win on Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (24-10, 5-4) scored seven runs on 12 hits, with three doubles and one home run.

Lucas Gordon pitched 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts, allowing just two runs on five hits. Travis Sthele came out of the bullpen and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his third win of the season. Justin Eckhardt pitched the eighth with one run allowed and Coy Cobb finished off the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

Ivan Melendez went 2-for-4 with one homer and three RBI, while Silas Ardoin went 3-for-3 with a double and one run scored and Austin Todd was 3-for-4 with one RBI.

TCU scored the first run of the game in the top of the second but Melendez quickly launched a two-run homer to give the Longhorns a 2-1 lead in the third.

TCU tied up the game 2-2 on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth and the game remain tied until the bottom of the sixth.

Todd drove in Murphy Stehly with a go-ahead single up the middle taking the lead, 3-2, in the sixth. Stehly had doubled to left and advanced on a single by Silas Ardoin before scoring on Todd’s RBI single.

The Longhorns extended their lead in the seventh with a pair of RBI hits by Hodo and Melendez. Trey Faltine walked, advanced on a groundout by Dylan Campbell, and scored from Hodo’s RBI double. Hodo scored on an RBI single by Melendez.

TCU hit a solo homer off of reliever Justin Eckhardt in the eighth for their final run. Skyler Messinger quickly answered and drove in Ardoin with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth. Faltine hit a sacrifice fly to allow Ace Whitehead to bring the score to 7-3. Whitehead pinch ran for Todd after he reached on a fielder’s choice.

Texas will play their final game of this homestead, against Stephen F. Austin at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before traveling for a weekend series against Kansas State.
