AUSTIN, Texas — No. 7 Texas Baseball crushed Stephen F. Austin, 13-2, on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (25-10, 5-4) will travel to Manhattan, Kan. this weekend for a series against Kansas State.
Ivan Melendez went 3-for-4 with two home runs, one double, five RBI and three runs scored. Melendez now has 16 homers this season, leading all Division I players.
Jack O’Dowd had a home run of his own, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Ace Whitehead came off the bench and went 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Whitehead also hit his first career double.
Melendez was quick to give Texas the lead in the first inning with a solo homer over the batter’s eye. That was Melendez’s fourth time to clear the monster in straightaway center field.
SFA tied up the ballgame 1-1 on a walk, an error, and a wild pitch in the top of the third.
The Longhorns took the lead for good in the third, batting around and scoring six runs on five hits to go up 7-1. Melendez hit an RBI double to center and Todd followed with an RBI double of his own. After a walk by Skyler Messinger then hit a two-run single, scoring Todd and Ardoin. O’Dowd added two more runs to the board, scoring Faltine and Messinger on a two-run single of his own.
Melendez launched a three-run home run in the fifth to make the score 10-2. To extend the Texas lead 11-2, Whitehead hit an RBI double to run O’Dowd across home plate in the sixth. O’Dowd then added the final two runs to the score with a two-run homer over left field in the eighth.
Daniel Blair pitched two innings of relief and allowed one run on three hits to pick up his second win of the season.
