STANFORD, Calif. – Blair Henley struck out a season-high eight batters and pitched six solid innings, but No. 12 Texas Baseball was unable to overcome a string of defensive miscues in a 4-2 loss to No. 6 Stanford Saturday at Sunken Diamond.
Henley had his best outing of the season, allowing no earned runs and allowing only five hits and two walks in six innings.
Texas scratched out a run in the top of the first inning after Duke Ellis started the game with a single up the middle. Ellis was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a fly ball to right.
With two outs in the inning, Zach Zubia drove in Ellis with an RBI single up the middle.
The Longhorns held that 1-0 lead until the fifth inning, when Stanford jumped in front 2-1 on a pair of unearned runs. A two-out error at shortstop allowed two runs to cross the plate.
The Longhorns battled back and tied the game up, 2-2, in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single by Zubia. The redshirt sophomore had his second-consecutive 2-for-3 game and has driven in the last three Texas runs.
Stanford took the lead right back with two runs in the seventh inning. A leadoff walk started the inning and back-to-back sacrifice flies drove in the runs.
The series finale between Texas and Stanford is Sunday at 3:05 p.m. CT.
