Traffic on Interstate 459 reopened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday night after being halted for almost six hours at Acton Road due to a 10-vehicle incident.
The Rocky Ridge Fire Department said that the crash occurred around 3 p.m.
According to authorities, the incident involved ten vehicles, including two 18-wheelers.
According to reports, the event occurred when the driver of a southbound 18-wheeler was involved in a crash with numerous other cars before crossing the median into the northbound lanes and colliding with another 18-wheeler.
Officials said the driver of the 18-wheeler that crossed the median had to be extricated. We are told that the driver was brought to a nearby hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.
We’re informed that three other people in the other vehicles sustained minor injuries; one went to the hospital for treatment, while the other two did not.
The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) was dispatched to the scene to assist with any hazardous materials concerns. We’re told that one of the 18-wheelers’ saddle bags contained diesel and were leaking, necessitating some cleanup in the northbound lanes.
Authorities are unsure how long it will take to clear the area and restore the road for traffic.
