Meta’s Threads is launching another test that could answer a long-standing issue about the service. According to Mark Zuckerberg’s article, the business is experimenting with allowing users to designate the non-algorithmic “following” feed as the default.
According to Zuckerberg, the update will allow users to set any feed as their default, including the recently released custom feeds. However, longstanding Threads users will be relieved to finally have the option to make “following” their default view.
Previously, Meta pushed users to its “for you” algorithmic feed, which has long been lambasted for its issues with engagement bait and its remarkable ability to push a mix of weird postings from total strangers to the top of users’ feeds.
As part of the test, Meta will make the option to alter your feed “more visible” in the app. Zuckerberg did not say how many users would participate in the test or how long it would take for the function to become official. “Interested to see how and if people use this,” he stated in an email.
The modification is the latest in a series of improvements implemented by Meta in recent weeks in response to rival Bluesky’s rapid expansion. Bluesky, which has witnessed an increase in new users since the election, defaults to a feed of content from accounts you follow and lacks a centralized algorithmic feed, while offering personalized feeds for more than a year.
