AUSTIN, Texas — No. 2 Texas rolled to a 10-2 win over UIW, clinching the series on Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (16-5) will go for the series sweep of the Cardinals on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Eric Kennedy went 3-for-5 and led the Longhorns with four RBI, all coming with two outs. Trey Faltine went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Ivan Melendez was 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBI.
Tristan Stevens threw another efficient game, using just 72 pitches in seven innings. He struck out two batters and did not issue any walks. He gave up just two runs and picked up his fourth win of the season.
For the second-consecutive day, UIW scored the first run of the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals used a one-out double, a fielder’s choice groundout and an infield single to get the run across.
The Longhorns got the run right back in the bottom of the second to tie the game 1-1. Murphy Stehly started the inning with a double, moved to second on an infield single and scored on a fielder’s choice groundout. Texas left the bases loaded in the inning to keep the game deadlocked.
The Longhorns brought the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI single by Kennedy and a fielding error by the Cardinals on Ivan Melendez scoring Douglas Hodo III on two-outs.
The Longhorns batted around in the fifth inning and scored five two-out runs. The bases were loaded with two hit batters and two walks, scoring Messinger. Kennedy then hit a two-run single into left field before Melendez hit a two-run triple down the right field line to make the lead 9-1
The final Longhorn run came across after back-to-back singles from Faltine and Mitchell Daly. The Cardinals got their second run of the game with a homer over left field off of Stevens.
Relievers Cameron Dayton, Justin Eckhardt, and Marcus Olivarez combined to finish the last two innings strong only allowing one hit, closing the game 10-2.
