According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, three individuals died this weekend and another was hospitalized as a result of three different crashes in the same Lowcountry county.
According to Master Trooper Gary Miller, the deadly collisions occurred in Jasper County over 19 hours.
According to Miller, the most recent wreck occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday.
Miller reported a single-vehicle crash on Purrysburg Road at Church Road.
According to Miller, a 2013 Nissan Altima was going east on Purrysburg Road when it went off the right side of the road, into a ditch, and collided with a tree.
Miller stated that the driver, the only person in the Nissan, perished.
There was no indication of whether the driver was wearing a seat belt, and details about what led the Nissan to go off the road were unavailable.
Another deadly crash occurred in Jasper County roughly 5 hours earlier. It occurred approximately one mile from Sunday’s tragedy.
According to Miller, a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was going south on Church Road at 7 p.m. Saturday when it collided with a southbound bicycle near Seabreeze Drive, killing the rider.
The Chevy driver, the sole person in the pickup truck, was unharmed, according to Miller.
According to Miller, the bicycle had no lights or reflectors. It was dark outside when the other crash occurred at 5:15 a.m. Miller reported on Saturday.
According to Miller, the two-vehicle crash occurred on South Carolina 462 near Bolan Hall Road.
A 2002 Ford Ranger pickup was traveling west on S.C. 462 when it crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis, according to Miller.
According to Miller, the vehicle driver died, and the truck driver was brought to a nearby hospital. More information on the surviving driver’s condition was not provided.
Miller stated that the drivers were the only ones in their respective vehicles, and no further injuries were reported.
There was no information on whether either driver wore a seat belt.
The cause of the Ford pickup’s veer into oncoming traffic remained unknown, but Miller stated that the Highway Patrol was still investigating the collision.
The Jasper County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified any of the persons killed in the unrelated crashes.
According to the state Department of Public Safety, at least 806 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2024 as of Oct. 27. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, 1,030 persons were killed in collisions last year.
According to DPS records, at least 17 persons died in collisions in Jasper County in 2024.
