COLLEGE STATION — The Gonzaga Bulldogs built a six-run lead in the sixth inning and cruised to victory over the Texas A&M Aggies 6-4 Friday night at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs produced six runs while the Aggies collected two. They managed to get two more in the home half of the eighth inning, but could not tie the game with two runners in scoring position with one out in the ninth.
Gonzaga went 5-of-15 batting with runners in scoring position while Texas A&M was 4-of-16.
“Give Gonzaga a lot of credit, they came out and threw the first punch,” said Texas A&M coach Rob Childress. “They more ready to go than we were to start the game, and got John Doxakis out after four innings. They did a great job against him, unlike nobody else has done this season or the end of last season. Give Gonzaga’s hitters all the credit and for us, we just had a lot of missed opportunities.”
The Aggies had 14 hits with six of the Maroon and White having two apiece, including Bryce Blaum, Logan Foster, Braden Shewmake, Mikey Hoehner, Cam Blake and Ty Coleman.
On the mound, reigning NCBWA Pitcher of the Month John Doxakis gave up three runs on seven hits while fanning two in 4.0 innings. Kyle Richardson scattered a hit and two walks while striking out four in his two scoreless innings, the seventh and eighth. Bryce Miller struck out two of three Bulldogs in a shutout ninth.
The Aggies and Bulldogs continue the series with game two Saturday at 2:02 p.m.
