Former state lawmaker announces run for Ohio Attorney General

The law is for everyone and should hold everyone accountable, according to a statement released Thursday by lawyer and former state representative Elliot Forhan, who became the first Democrat to declare a race for Ohio attorney general in 2026.

In his announcement, Forhan declared that he was running to apply the law equally to everyone, including the wealthy and influential. This entails (1) putting an end to corruption, which includes apprehending and punishing wealthy tax evaders; (2) removing money from politics; and (3) combating unlawful federal government acts.

In 2026, candidates will run for all four of Ohio’s statewide executive positions. Along with Forhan, several Democratic candidates have been revealed, including oncologist Dr. Bryan Hambley, who is running for Ohio Secretary of State, and former Ohio Department of Health head Dr. Amy Acton, who is running for governor.

Republican candidates include former Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague for secretary of state, former Ohio Auditor Keith Faber for attorney general, and former Secretary of State Frank LaRose for auditor. Current Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and entrepreneur Heather Hill are all vying for the Republican primary for governor.

Despite finishing third in the 2024 Democratic primary, Forhan was elected to the Ohio House in 2022 and held the office for a single two-year term. Among other Statehouse officials, Forhan mentioned in his announcement that he had a pending defamation claim against the Ohio Attorney General that revolves around a number of controversies during his time in the General Assembly.

In his press statement, Forhan also mentioned that he graduated from Yale Law School and Kenyon College, and that Ramaswamy, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Second Lady Usha Vance were among his fellow law school classmates.

Elon Musk, the best friend of Vivek Ramaswamy, is tearing up the federal government. Programs that keep us safe, secure, and free, like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Affairs (the V.A.), and cancer research, are being harmed and destroyed by Musk. Forhan stated in the announcement that Ramaswamy intends to follow suit here in Ohio. I won’t allow it to occur in my capacity as attorney general.

Forhan resides in Northeast Ohio’s Brooklyn Heights community.
