On Thursday, October 17, 2024, a Chevrolet Express van crashed on Interstate 24, killing five people and injuring three more.
The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) arrived at the scene and discovered numerous individuals trapped in the overturned vehicle. Despite the rescue efforts, five people died, while three others survived and were transported to a local hospital.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) reported that the van, which was going through Rutherford County, drove off the road at approximately 1:00 a.m.
The driver, 21-year-old Pham Tan Hoang of Georgia, lost control of the vehicle, driving it up an embankment and into the Highway 96 (Franklin Road) bridge. Following the incident, the van rolled back down the embankment and came to a stop behind a guardrail beneath the overpass.
The wreck killed Hoang and four other passengers, all of whom were Georgia residents. Alaniz Baido, 27, William Bolia, 65, Pham Hung Van, 57, and Kong Adam Bebe, 29, were all killed.
In a difficult rescue effort, MFRD firemen worked to free the survivors and victims from the crushed van. The THP report stated that it was unknown whether the driver or all of the passengers in the van were wearing seatbelts.
Interstate 24 was momentarily closed while Murfreesboro Police worked to manage traffic and secure the situation. The freeway remained shut while emergency responders finished their work.
It has been verified that no charges are being considered in the disaster, and it appears that the van was the only vehicle involved in the fatal accident.
