April Snow Surprises: New Yorkers Share Their Reactions to Sudden Cold Snap

New Yorkers are becoming frustrated at the rollercoaster weather conditions that have hit the region recently.

Temperatures have been all over the place in recent weeks, with spring starting to make an appearance before temperatures plummet again as it feels more like winter. “It’s freezing, I wasn’t expecting this but I see that every year it’s changing a little bit, it’s not good,” one NYC resident told Fox 5 .

“I want it to be warm again,” another complained. A third added: “I love the cold weather but not in April…this is supposed to be spring and the poor flowers.” Unfortunately, millions of people across the state will have to hold out longer for that spring weather as temperatures will remain cool while the region is set to be hit by a blanket of heavy rain over the weekend.

It’s not all bad news though, conditions are set to look up by Monday as warmer temperatures return alongside the sunshine.

What is the weather?

New York residents are in for another cold day as conditions remain unseasonably chilly on Thursday, with temperatures dropping to as low as 23F.

Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t appear to be looking up for the next few days as the region is set to be blanketed by wet weather in the coming days. Forecasters predict around 1 to 1.5 inches of rainfall as temperatures remain cool.

Weather experts have warned there is a risk of coastal flooding. “In areas from near New Jersey and New York City to central New England and Boston, east to northeast breezes will last around 48 hours or so mainly from Thursday night to Saturday afternoon,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek said.

He added: “The duration of the onshore wind and the upcoming full moon (April 12) close to the same time will lead to coastal flooding at times of high tide.”

Where is being impacted?

The entire state is likely to be affected by rainfall over the next few days while temperatures in most places remain chilly.

In NYC, the morning will begin with temperatures of 39F, rising to 48F. Utica will be particularly cold as the day gets off to temperatures of 23F before gradually rising to 44F.

In Buffalo, temperatures will start at 35F but only rise to 39F while in Rochester the morning starts at 26F and rises to 39F. Albany will see temperatures of 26F in the morning and 50F by the afternoon while Syracuse will see similar temperatures in the morning but experience a cooler 42F in the afternoon.

When will it snow in New York?

In the Catskills, overnight temperatures dip to freezing on Thursday so a light coating of snow is likely by early Friday morning.

When is the rain expected to begin?

Light rain showers are due to begin as early as Thursday evening. On Friday, a few stray showers will drift through the region during the day but steady rain is set to blanket the state by the evening.

When is the rain and cold weather expected to end?

In NYC, it will remain chilly with periods of rain on Friday and Saturday. It will be slightly warmer on Sunday but there will be a morning mist and it will be breezy. Finally, Monday is set to bring an end to the cold and wet weather as the sun comes out and temperatures rise to 64F.

A similar pattern is set to happen over much of the state, with the weather system on its way out by Sunday, creating drier conditions although clouds could linger, while Monday will see a return to spring-like weather as the sun shines and temperatures reach highs of 70F.

Why should people care?

The heavy rain could impact your weekend plans.“ If anyone has outdoor plans Friday and Saturday, you may have to change the plans,” National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey urges. “It’s just, you know, a good soaker,” he adds.

It’s recommended that outdoor weekend plans should be reserved for Sunday when conditions are likely to be more dry. Ramsey said there’s not a major flood risk during the rain. Road surfaces will be wet but travel conditions should remain okay.

What’s causing the rain?

The rain is being brought to the state by a low- and slow-moving pressure system that is set to roll through the area.

The low pressure will track northeast out of the Ohio Valley, bringing precipitation to the area by Thursday evening.
