Both the woman and her boyfriend are still in jail after her daughter died Friday night.
Taylor Marie Hughes, 29, and Seth Hunter Brown, 26, both of Lyons, went before a judge on Monday. They were charged with the murder of Reese Hughes, 4, who was Taylor’s daughter.
The government said Brown is Taylor’s boyfriend. They are charged with aggravated battery, criminal murder, mischief murder, and cruelty to children in the first degree.
At the meetings, no bond was set, but it can be asked for once Hughes’ and Brown’s lawyers are chosen.
They were caught after a probe that began on March 14. Deputies from Toombs County were called to a call about a child who wasn’t responding. The person who called said they were on their way from home to the hospital. The caller met first responders at the Lyons Enmarket store on the corner of West Liberty Street and South Victory Drive.
Authorities say that paramedics started saving lives right away while on their way to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia.
The child was declared dead soon after getting to the hospital.
There aren’t many facts out there about how the child died, but District Attorney Tripp Fitzner said it’s a terrible case.
“This case has been talked about a lot on social media.” This is a terrible situation. I don’t have the words to describe how terrible this tragedy is. Even if you don’t know the people involved, Fitzner wrote, “It affects us deeply and through our bodies.”
Fitzner is going to be the main lawyer in this case. The probe is still going on.
