Driver Arrested in Georgia for St. Pete Crash That Left 20-year-old Dead, Faces Vehicular Murder Charge

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A man has been charged with vehicular murder after being detained in connection with a deadly St. Pete crash that killed a 20-year-old passenger in July, according to investigators.

According to a Facebook post by St. Petersburg police, Georgia officials detained Herbert Jones, 26, on Sunday in Turner County, Georgia.

According to the agency, Jones was arrested in the region for an unrelated offense; however, Georgia investigators discovered he had a warrant for his arrest in St. Petersburg for vehicular murder.

Police determined Jones drove the car that crashed and killed Jeremiah Jones on Sunday, July 14. The incident occurred at the junction of 22nd Avenue South and 13th Street South. The two males are reportedly unrelated.

Herbert and Jeremiah were driving in a Toyota Corolla when they allegedly ran into the path of a 62-year-old Altamonte Springs man attempting to turn his Ford Edge into the westbound lanes.

Officers said the two automobiles collided, causing the Toyota to spin multiple times before Jeremiah was ejected. He was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he died the next day as a result of his injuries, according to authorities.

According to the St. Pete Police Department, Herbert Jones is still in custody in Georgia but will be extradited to Pinellas County at a later date.

According to investigators, further charges are being added for leaving the scene of a fatal collision and driving with a suspended or revoked license.
