Two Men Charged With Murder in Drive-by Shooting of 18-year-old: What We Know

Two men have been charged with murder in the drive-by shooting of an 18-year-old who was hit in the brain stem and died seven hours later, according to court records.

Daniel Ramos, 46, and Angel Pimentel, 26, have been charged with murder, shooting at an occupied car, and shooting from an occupied vehicle, according to court documents. Ramos, the suspected shooter, has also been charged with firearms enhancement for allegedly firing the fatal shot.

Police said the victim, Angel Enciso Ayala, 18, was traveling down the 27000 block of Pompano Avenue when the suspects passed him in their own car. Ramos allegedly opened fire as the two automobiles passed each other, striking Enciso Ayala in the neck. He crashed his automobile on nearby Havana Avenue.

The Chevrolet Suburban from which Ramos reportedly fired was registered to him, thus he instantly became the prime suspect. Pimentil was identified as a potential aider and abettor after investigators scanned the car’s computer system and discovered that his cellphone’s bluetooth system was linked to the Chevrolet before, during, and after the crime, according to court filings.

Ramos has been arrested and been in court twice, but has yet to enter a plea, according to court documents. Pimentil appears to have not yet been arrested.

Jail records for both Alameda and San Joaquin counties, where Pimentil is known to frequent, show he is not in custody in either jurisdiction. He hasn’t yet appeared in court.

Both males have had previous encounters with police. Ramos was convicted of possessing an assault weapon in 2010, while Pimentil had prior convictions for gun possession and possessing drugs in a correctional institution, according to court documents.

Pimentil was most recently convicted of second-degree robbery in Alameda County in 2019, according to court records.

While on parole last year, police examined him for a possible parole violation based on an Instagram photo on another person’s account that showed him brandishing a pistol. He was never charged, but during the inquiry, detectives discovered that he belonged to a Hayward-based gang, according to officials.

Ramos is being held without bail. Police have not revealed the motive for the shooting, nor have they confirmed if Enciso Ayala was the intended target or a case of mistaken identity.
