The Gunfire happened during Tennessee State University’s homecoming celebrations, killing one person and injuring nine others, according to Nashville Police Department officials.
According to MNPD Public Affairs Director Don Aaron, three of the nine injured were adolescents aged 12 to 14, and all are in non-critical condition at a nearby hospital.
Shortly about 5 p.m., two groups of people exchanged gunfire. Officials believe innocent people were shot during the event. Ten persons were shot, and one of them, a 24-year-old, died as a result of their injuries.
Five people were transferred to local hospitals by ambulance. Brooke Reese, Public Affairs Officer for the Metro Nashville Police Department, stated that five others were transferred by private vehicle.
According to Reese, officials believe that some of those injured and hospitalized were involved in the gunshots.
Aaron stated that the injuries ranged from minor to critical, with some getting grazing wounds.
He stated one pistol, a handgun, was seized at the scene. Officials believe the suspects utilized pistols during the shooting. Fire and police officials had already arrived at the venue to participate in the homecoming march earlier today, according to authorities. According to Nashville Fire Department PIO Kendra Loney, several firefighters were already on the site when gunshots erupted and used their belts to apply tourniquets to victims of the shooting.
According to Nashville North Precinct Commander Anthony McClain, the majority of those celebrating homecoming traveled to the Tennessee State University football game, which was hosted at Nissan Stadium. During the day, a sizable crowd had assembled for the march.
When the gunfire started approximately two hours ago during the festival, “a few folks ruined it for everybody,” McClain added.
