Myrtle Beach Police Make Arrest in 2010 Sexual Assault Case Involving Minor

Myrtle Beach Police arrested a 37-year-old man after a lady reported that he assaulted her at a motel in 2010.

Joseph Witherspoon was arrested on October 10 for first-degree criminal sexual assault with a minor. He is being jailed in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail.

According to a police complaint, the victim informed officers on July 29 that Witherspoon assaulted her while she was on vacation at the Caribbean Resort, 3000 North Ocean Boulevard, in November 2010. The victim’s age was not disclosed, however, the offense involving a minor indicates that the victim was 11 years old or less, according to South Carolina law.

The relationship between Witherspoon and the victim was not revealed.

Witherspoon would have been 23 years old at the time of the incident. After the offense was reported in July, Myrtle Beach Police conducted an investigation and notified major crime units.

According to the Law Offices of Kenneth Berger, South Carolina does not have a statute of limitations on criminal accusations.
