Despite below freezing temps, protestors rally against Trump, urge Democrats to take action

At the Michigan Capitol on Monday, hundreds of demonstrators braved freezing temperatures to participate in a President’s Day demonstration.

However, the organization also targeted Democratic members of Congress who they believe aren’t doing enough to oppose Trump’s policies, even as they came together to protest the activities of the Trump administration.

Maggie Doyle claimed that there aren’t enough leaders in the Democratic Party right now.

Doyle claimed that we are currently being let down by our leadership. Someone needs to take the initiative and tell them not to lower their pride flag. Keep your D.E.I. department open. Stand firm and together; we will overcome this.

“Where are our representatives?” was chanted by the audience several times. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township) and Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly), as well as members of Michigan’s delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives, were asked on several signs and throughout the protest why they haven’t been more vocal in their opposition to Trump in his first month in office.

Earlier Monday, it was uncertain if the protest would continue. The national 50501 Movement, so titled because it aimed to stage 50 protests in 50 states in a single day, was the original organizer of the event. On February 5, the group attracted a sizable gathering to the Capitol.

However, local activists chose to proceed with the event despite the original organizers’ text message stating that it had been canceled due to the excessive cold.

According to one local organizer, there is no central committee in charge of today’s protests, and they appear to have developed naturally.

The number of individuals that attended the demonstration in spite of the weather and the official postponement, according to Kimberly Bogan, is a testament to the movement’s vitality.

“I know that our collective resolve is stronger, even though the challenges we face ahead are formidable,” Bogan stated. Let this assembly serve as evidence of our dedication to freedom, equality, and justice. We will stand together, fight back, and recover our country’s essence.
