Kansas City Man Charged After 3-month-old Girl Found With Severe Injuries, Including Brain Damage

A Kansas City man has been charged with felony child abuse or neglect after doctors at Children’s Mercy Hospital discovered serious injuries in a 3-month-old girl on Saturday.

According to court filings, Johnny C. Bonacorso, 29, cared for the girl overnight on Friday and Saturday morning.

The infant’s mother spotted injuries on her daughter Saturday morning and took her to Children’s Mercy Urgent Care.

According to court filings, the girl was then taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.

According to the charging documents, the infant sustained brain damage, clavicle fractures on both sides of her torso, and a broken femur.

Tests also discovered a number of significant damage to other bodily parts. Lisa Mizell, CEO of the Child Protection Center, has no connection to the case but claims her agency assists families and infants who have been abused.

“There’s a depravity to doing that to an infant that is unimaginable to most people, and they’re dependent on you for everything in their life,” she told me.

“People assume, ‘Oh, it’s a baby. They will forget. They do not. This is a trauma that will become ingrained in their DNA, and you must assist them in figuring out how to cope with it,” she added.

Mizell said her organization is always available to assist families in need.

Meanwhile, Bonacorso has pleaded not guilty.

He did not talk with detectives after being read his Miranda rights.

Bonacorso is in jail with a $50,000 bond. He’s requested a public defender.

His next court date is October 15.
