The Iowa Department of Natural Resources stated that three men died Sunday after their boat capsized below Lock and Dam No. 12 on the Mississippi River in Bellevue in northeast Iowa.
According to a DNR news release, the boat overturned while the victims were fishing in a restricted area. According to preliminary information, it was dragged into dangerous waters caused by a severe overflow from the dam’s operation.
According to the announcement, the males were taken from the water and rescuers attempted to revive them, but two were pronounced dead on the site. A third person was transported by ambulance to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center in Dubuque and pronounced dead there, according to the report.
The names of the dead have been withheld pending notification of their relatives, and the accident is still being investigated, according to the DNR.
This was the second tragic boating incident recorded in Iowa on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced that the body of a Des Moines duck hunter had been discovered in Lake Red Rock after his boat began to take on water.
