Severe Weather Alert: Wind Gusts and Snowfall Impacting Great Lakes and Upper Midwest

ERIE, Pennsylvania — A fresh winter storm is expected to sweep across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast this week, bringing severe winds and probable near-blizzard conditions to areas still recovering from feet of snow that dropped during the previous several days.

The storm may potentially produce a few snowflakes along the Interstate 95 corridor.

The storm system, informally known as an “Alberta Clipper” due to its rapid movement and origins within its namesake Canadian province, will first bring a gust of wind and snow to the Great Lakes and upper Midwest on Wednesday.

The heaviest snowfall on Wednesday will be caused by lake effects and will fall primarily on the eastern shores of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

Winter Storm Watches and Warnings are in force for Michigan’s western snow belts and the Upper Peninsula, with new snowfall totals topping a foot.

However, sporadic snow squalls are expected across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes on Wednesday, with widespread wind gusts reaching 40-50 mph, perhaps resulting in near-blizzard or whiteout conditions.
