A driver has been arrested on suspicion of DUI following a catastrophic incident in Upland that killed a man and two sons early Saturday, Nov. 16.
Around 2:19 a.m., a semi-truck was traveling eastbound in the far-right lane of the 210 Freeway just east of Base Line Road when a car, believed to be a Ford Taurus, approached at high speed and crashed into the back of the semi, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol’s Rancho Cucamonga office.
Jimenez said Monday that a 35-year-old male driver got out of the car before it caught fire.
Firefighters extinguished the fire, discovering a male in the front passenger seat and two youngsters in the back seat. All three were pronounced deceased on the scene.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Officials suspect that alcohol was a “determining factor” in the tragedy. The individual was freed from prison and transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Authorities did not immediately reveal the suspect’s or victims’ names, ages, or any other identifying information.
The driver of the semi-truck reported no injuries.
