Bay Area Prepares for Bone-Chilling Temperatures and King Tide Flooding

King tides are forecast to flood coastal areas in the Bay Area this weekend, and below-freezing temperatures have been added to the mix.

According to the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office, frost and freezing temperatures are predicted to hit locations along the Central and Northern California coast late Friday night and Saturday morning.

Temperatures will most certainly drop to the upper 20s and lower 30s, creating a risk to unsheltered people and outdoor pets in particular. Plants and pipes may potentially be damaged.

Starting Friday night, sub-freezing temperatures could affect places such as San Benito County, the North Bay interior valleys and mountains, and Monterey County’s Cholame Hills.

Temperatures in Sonoma are anticipated to drop as low as 35 degrees on Friday night. Meanwhile, a frost advisory has been issued for Del Norte, Humboldt, and the Mendocino Coast.

Northern California residents can prepare for the cold weather by bringing their plants and pets inside, as well as wrapping or draining pipes to keep them from freezing.

“You always want to think about the four P’s,” Karleisa Rogacheski, a meteorologist with the weather service, told SFGATE. “You want to protect people, plants, pipes” and household pets. Rogacheski suggests taking animals indoors, layering up, and keeping a close eye on your community.

“Check on your friends, family and neighbors to see how they’re doing things during these times,” Rogacheski told reporters.
