A Coastal Flood Watch was issued for numerous counties in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry on Friday, with up to 1-2 feet of saltwater inundation possible.
The coastal flood watch has been issued for the following counties in our area:
Beaufort
Bryan
Chatham
Colleton
Glynn
Jasper
Liberty
McIntosh
A Coastal Flood Watch has been issued for our area for Saturday morning from 6 to 10 a.m.
The Savannah River at Fort Pulaski is expected to reach 10.5 feet, a major flood level, Saturday morning. This will most likely result in the closure of U.S. Highway 80 between the Bull River Bridge and Lazaretto Creek before high tide, which is expected at about 8 a.m.
Saltwater inundation is forecast throughout Georgia and South Carolina’s coastlines.
This will be an issue again on Sunday morning, albeit the tidal level is expected to be closer to 10 feet. If the forecast of 10.5′ is accurate, this would be a top-ten crest at Fort Pulaski.
The full Beaver Moon, a supermoon, is causing these higher-than-normal tides. The Beaver Moon will also be the final supermoon of 2024, rising on November 15.
Earlier this week, a strong onshore wind caused a 10.25-foot high tide, prompting the temporary closure of Highway 80.
