Woman Arrested After Fatal Montclair Road Hit-and-run Involving High-speed Reckless Driving

A Birmingham woman has been charged with the traffic death of a man on Montclair Road in Mountain Brook.

Hanna Gray Williams, 30, was charged with reckless manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, police said Friday.

The crash killed 33-year-old Robert Ashley May Jr., a Montgomery native and former Troy University cheerleader.

The deadly crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, in the 3900 block of Montclair Road. Officers discovered what seemed to be a single-vehicle crash in which May was ejected. He was brought to UAB Hospital and died a short time later.

As investigators interrogated witnesses at the scene of the incident, it was discovered that a second car was involved and fled the scene before the authorities arrived, police said Friday.

They then discovered that the second vehicle was going at a high speed and participated in risky and reckless driving, which led to the incident.

Williams was booked into Jefferson County Jail at 6:32 p.m. on Friday and released at 8:59 p.m. after posting a $45,000 bond.

May graduated from Stanhope Elmore High School, where he was a standout varsity football player who won Defensive Player of the Year.

His family reported he was also an excellent baseball player who attended Troy University on a cheerleading scholarship.

He worked as a damage repair specialist at Carvana in Bessemer, focusing on international vehicles.

In a Facebook post, family stated, “To know Robert was to love him.” He was gorgeous. He was an excellent person. He was an excellent brother and uncle. He was amazing at everything.”

“He was the best son,” his family stated. “The world is less bright now.”
