Interior Northern California is bracing for a week of weather, as a fast-moving storm dumps rain and snow on the mountains today.
This system, which is moving fast through the region, has already brought up to an inch of rain to sections of the Sacramento Valley, with brief, intense downpours likely in isolated spots this afternoon.
Snow is also falling in the Sierra, with accumulations of 6 inches or more expected by Tuesday morning in elevations above 6,000 feet. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in place until midnight.
Following a small respite in the activity on Tuesday, with generally dry weather and seasonal temperatures, another major storm will arrive on Wednesday.
This second system is expected to bring more rain to the Valley and foothills, as well as isolated thunderstorms and more mountain snow throughout the weekend. The moderate break on Tuesday will bring colder morning temperatures in the 40s for the majority of the lower elevations, as well as the possibility of patchy frost above 2,000 feet.
Expect a little warm-up Wednesday before the next round of wet and snowy weather arrives, keeping Northern California in a busy, wintery trend until the weekend.
