ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – A road accident in Ivory Coast killed 21 people and injured at least ten more, according to authorities on Monday.
The collision occurred Sunday night on a section of road connecting the southwestern city of Soubré and the south-central town of Gagnoa, according to a Ministry of Transport statement, without providing any other information. However, the statement indicated that an investigation had been initiated.
“The Ministry of Transport calls on all road users to be more vigilant in road traffic, by complying with traffic regulations, in particular by being careful when overtaking and by adapting their speed to the different speed limits,” according to the release.
Earlier this year, a tanker truck smashed into a bus in northern Ivory Coast, killing 13 passengers and injuring 44.
Accidents are widespread in the West African country due to poor roads and irresponsible driving, killing more than 1,000 people each year, according to the government.
Last year, officials implemented a point-based driver’s license, giving each driver 12 points that can be gradually deducted based on the offense. Cameras were also installed on the country’s major roadways to fine offenders.
