NEW BEDFORD – According to Massachusetts State Police, two passengers of a car traveling on Interstate 195 in New Bedford perished and three others were sent to the hospital following a crash Friday morning.
According to an email from MSP Interim Director of Media Relations Tim McGuirk, at 9:35 a.m., MSP responded from the Dartmouth Barracks to reports of a motor vehicle crash on I-195 East in New Bedford near Exit 24A.
“The crash remains under investigation by the Bristol County Detective Unit as well as the State Police’s Crime Scene Services Section and Collision Accident Reconstruction Services,” according to the email. “Preliminary reports indicate that a vehicle carrying five (5) people rolled over.
Two (2) of the occupants were confirmed dead on the site as a result of their injuries, while three (3) others were taken to a nearby hospital.”
Authorities closed the highway’s middle and right lanes as they investigated the incident for safety. As of 3:02 p.m., when McGuirk’s email was received, the investigation was still ongoing.
