Life-threatening Rip Currents Expected in Texas, Florida From Former Hurricane Rafael

While not projected to have a direct impact on the United States, Rafael is creating life-threatening rip currents in sections of Florida, Alabama, and Texas on Friday and throughout the weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a High Rip Current Warning for the Florida panhandle down to Fort Myers and parts of the southeast Texas coast.

According to FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross, Rafael has intensified somewhat unexpectedly; nonetheless, it is not projected to hit the United States. Here’s Rafael’s most recent track.

According to the NWS, rip current-prone locations are dangerous for swimmers of all skill levels, and people should avoid the water.

A significant rip current warning has also been issued for the east coast of Florida and the area surrounding South Padre Island in Texas.

The FOX Forecast Center expects wave heights ranging from six to nine feet off the Louisiana coast Friday morning.
