Unseasonably cold weather is expected to arrive overnight in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Sub-freezing temperatures overnight raise concerns about widespread heavy frost and freeze in areas experiencing it for the first time this season.
The National Weather Service has issued frost advisories and freeze warnings across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. The air will be frigid enough in cities like Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Atlantic City to justify advisories and warnings in normal “heat island” areas.
Ahead of this cooler airmass, we’re seeing the boundary produce additional on-and-off soaking rain and rumbles across North and South Carolina. This is the same area of energy that triggered severe rain and thunderstorms across Tennessee, western South Carolina, and western North Carolina yesterday.
Today, eastern North Carolina is getting much-needed rain. We are also seeing a few scattered showers and storms in northeast Georgia and western South Carolina. We’ll see all of this energy move towards the coast, then maybe return in the form of gusty showers when high pressure pushes everything back in the following 24-48 hours.
Today, expect heavy rain and thunderstorms in the discussed region. Some storms may produce gusty gusts, tiny hail, and brief heavy rain. However, no organized severe weather is predicted at this moment.
