California Mother Charged After 4-year-old Son Accidentally Shoots Himself in Car

A mother in California has reportedly been arrested and charged with many counts after her 4-year-old kid shot himself earlier this week.

According to local media sites such as CBS Sacramento, ABC station KXTV, and NBC affiliate KCRA, 26-year-old Latisha Walker was arrested after the Sacramento Police Department reported her son shooting himself with a revolver at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 on the 4500 block of Mack Road.

Walker’s bond was set at $75,000, and she now faces three felony charges: having a hidden firearm in a car, unlawful storage of a gun, and endangering the life of a kid, according to CBS Sacramento.

Walker was released from detention on Saturday, October 26, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office inmate portal.

On Sunday, October 27, a Sacramento Police Department representative did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional information. KCRA reports that the gunshot occurred inside a vehicle in a parking lot. According to the publication, the infant is expected to survive after being brought to a local hospital.

Walker was inside a shop when the shooting occurred, according to KCRA, which cited multiple witnesses.

According to CBS Sacramento, customers inside surrounding businesses heard the kid plead for aid. Shynice Cordoba, a 19-year-old who was inside a nail shop at the time, told the publication that she heard the mother yelling and a “noise.”

“I go outside, and he’s just lying on the floor,” Cordoba explained. “I need something to apply pressure on his wound. I get the tissue and place it on his wound. He was chatting to me and I was talking to him; he was terrified.”

“He kept saying he shot himself. He shot himself. So I was like, ‘It’s fine, you’re not in trouble. “It’s fine,” she continued.

Cordoba added, “He asked me to pick him up. But I had to reassure him and say, “No, you cannot get up.” You need to stay here. And we talked about Paw Patrol, his age, and such. “Until they got here.”

A police spokesperson informed CBS Sacramento that the youngster received medical care on-site before being sent to the hospital.

According to KCRA, the first responder “put pressure on his wound” and helped “keep him on his side.” Officer Anthony Gamble, a Sacramento Police Department spokesperson, told the Sacramento Bee that the shooting was being investigated, with officers looking into how the youngster obtained the weapon.

Walker will make her first court appearance on Wednesday, October 31, according to PEOPLE.
