A 64-year-old man died of his injuries after being struck by a public transport bus on his birthday, according to Florida authorities.
According to a news release from the city’s police department, the incident occurred just before 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, on 22nd Avenue North near the Pinellas Trail in St. Petersburg.
Authorities stated a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus carrying ten people approached the trail crosswalk but did not stop for passing pedestrians.
Officers claimed that a pedestrian-activated the crosswalk light before the crash and began crossing. The 64-year-old, who was on a motorized scooter, entered the crosswalk about the same time and attempted to cross before being struck by the PSTA bus, according to authorities.
The man was transferred to a hospital and died. Authorities have not revealed his identity pending notification of his family, but they have established that he turned 64 on Tuesday.
No further injuries were reported, according to authorities.
