QUEEN CITY — The Ore City Rebels held forth against a late surge from the Queen City Bulldogs to escape Smith-Wall Stadium with a 56-36 victory Friday night.
The Bulldogs amassed 20 fourth quarter points, but gave up 10 in the final period to the Rebels. The Bulldogs passing game tried to keep pace with Ore City as the Bulldogs compiled 16-of-35 for 300 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions on the night.
Queen City got off to an optimistic start when Vonte Frank rushed for an 11-yard touchdown to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead after a two point conversion from Caleb Dawson catching a Dylan Scott throw. However, the Rebels responded with 35 unanswered points that did not have a rejoinder from Queen City until 2:32 in the third quarter when Scott found Dawson for a 42-yard touchdown.
Ore City out-gained Queen City 413 to 361 in total offense with most of it coming on the ground as the Rebels churned 283 rushing yards on 38 carries. Queen City could only muster 61 yards on 26 attempts.
The Rebels produced 23 first downs to the Bulldogs’ 16, and Ore City also won the turnover battle with one fumble to the Bulldogs’ four interceptions and one fumble.
The Bulldogs (0-8, 0-5) stay at home next week for Senior Night against the Waskom Wildcats, who are 7-1 on the season and 5-0 in district play.
