A man of integrity, James Varnell Neff, fell asleep Tuesday night, July 9th 2013 at the age of 55, after a short but valiant fight against pancreatic cancer. He fought it until the end, and he finished the race.
James was born January 27, 1958 in Texarkana, Texas to the parents of Lunda and Dolly Neff.
James was in all counts, as good as you could get. Meeting the woman of his dreams, Glenda on July 16th 1980 and proposing to her just a little over a month later on August 20th 1980. Then a matter of days later on August 31st 1980 they began clearing off land and lumber to build their life. With the help of the loving hands of a loving family, a log cabin was built in which two children, and a grandson would be raised.
Faith, family, and friends, the most important things, he had said.
He was a longtime faithful elder in the United Church of God, and taught, lived and held fast the faith. A pillar.
James was dedicated to his career of 36 years, beginning in the early days of his career with Langdon Oxygen, that later became Airgas Mid-South here in Texarkana, Texas where he has held the position of Branch Business manager.
He was most content with a stringed (acoustic) instrument resting in his hands. A musician for practically his whole life, Bluegrass music, just good music, as he described it.
If it had strings, he could play it, however the instrument that he called his own, and that his family will remember well was the mandolin. Playing the mandolin for the band The Pickin’ Hicks, they played at various shows including the Louisiana Hayride for many years. Enjoying the music.
James leaves behind his loving wife, Glenda, his daughter Sarah, his grandson James David (JD), his son Joseph and daughter-in- law, Elizabeth.
Three brothers and their wives, Lonnie and Kay, Charles and Donna, Gary and Jo Ellen. Two sisters Linda Laper, and Violet and Steve Helmes.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Lunda and Dolly, step-mother Vera. Brothers, Lunda Jr., Cecil, David, Billy, Larry and one sister Lillie.
