Atlanta Chamber Of Commerce
• The Chamber is going to launch a new event this year,
the Children's Independence Day Parade on July 6th, 2013
at 10:00 a.m. It will be a mini-parade (with an altered
and shortened route) consisting of bikes, tricycles,
wagons, battery-operated cars, pets and more. This will
probably be one of the most adorable things that's ever
happened to the Atlanta Area, so make sure your kids,
grand kids, and fur kids don't miss out! We've created
an event on facebook where you can download the
registration forms (it's free).
• Next, the Miss Atlanta pageant is right around the
corner! If you know someone who wants to compete, please
send them my way. I need to get an idea of how many
competitors we'll have this year early on. Also, if you
would like to sponsor a category, let us know. It's
great exposure for you!
• Last, looking ahead to Hoot N' Holler weekend in
mid-September, there will be many new and exciting
features this year, including a glow-in-the-dark 5K
hosted by the Young Professionals Network, more vendors
and a few surprises! Get ready to get involved, because
we need your help to make Hoot N Holler a success in
2013!
Cass
County’s Hope 4-H Club Qualify for Regional Contest
The best 4-H and FFA woodland teams from the State of
Texas went head to head recently in the State Woodland
Clinic held at the Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest
near Nacogdoches. Cass County’s Hope 4-H Club placed
first in the State Competition and qualified for the
Regional Contest. The State contest is developed each
year by the Natural Resources Conservation Service,
State Association of Soil and Water Conservation
Districts, Texas Forest Service and Stephen F. Austin
School of Forestry.
When the final scores were tallied Caleb Whatley, Andrew
Harp, Tadd Mitchell and Cameron Palmer along with
advisor Brian Whatley had earned First Place honors in
the toughest competition in the State.
To qualify for this level of competition, teams had to
place first or second in local Woodland Clinics held
throughout East Texas, sponsored by local Soil and Water
Conservation Districts.
FFA advisors and 4-H leaders spent many hours training
students in basic forestry skills in preparation for the
contests ahead. Students were tested on hardwood tree
identification, wildlife browse plants, pine
identification, rate of growth, selective thinning, tree
volume, wood products, wood identification from blocks
of wood, site index, cull tree removal, site management
concerns, and a compass and pacing course.
State Woodland Clinic first and second place teams in
4-H and FFA divisions will now advance to the Southern
Regional Woodland Clinic - the Super Bowl of Woodland
Clinics. In this year’s Regional competition, Texas,
Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana will each send their
six best teams to compete. The contest will take place
at Millwood Lake in Ashdown Arkansas on May 3, 2013.
The East Texas Timberland Owners’ Association is proud
to support the Cass County’s Hope 4-H Club’s advance to
the Southern Regional Woodland Clinic. The East Texas
Timberland Owners’ Association serves the timber owners
of Bowie, Cass, Marion and Red River Counties and
welcome new members. We are a non-profit organization
whose objectives include educating landowners about good
forest management and harvesting practices, and keeping
landowners up to date on matters affecting timberland
operations, taxes, and legislative actions. For
additional information, contact Fred Winters, Public
Relations Officer at 903-639-1267 or Russell Lykins,
Linden District Forester at 903-756-5571/5572 or John

Great
Tickets for Biloxi Blues Available Now Come see one of
Neil Simon's greatest and funniest plays!
Neil Simon’s Tony award-winning play follows the
adventures of Eugene Morris Jerome and his fellow Army
inductees as they struggle through basic training near
Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1943. An aspiring writer who
sees himself as an outsider observing the craziness
around him, Eugene hopes to somehow remain “neutral ...
like Switzerland.” He spends much of his free time
recounting conversations and impressions in his journal,
feeling a little ashamed for betraying the “secret and
private thoughts’’ of his fellow soldiers.
Biloxi Blues is a comedy about young men going off to
war. These men are universal soldiers facing the same
fears, anxieties, and loneliness that grip all young
recruits about to encounter the ultimate test of combat.
Mr. Simon brings his great sense of humor and humanity
to every word of this magnificent play.
TRAHC is very fortunate and proud to bring Neil Simon to
our regional audience with one of his masterpieces,
Biloxi Blues.

revelations.” – VARIETY

Volunteers Make the Difference for Texas Children in Foster
Care
When a child enters the foster care system because his or
her home is no longer safe because of abuse or neglect, a
judge may appoint a committed volunteer, called a CASA or
Court Appointed Special Advocate™. CASA volunteers research
case records and speak to everyone in a child’s life,
including their family members, teachers, doctors, lawyers,
social workers and others. The volunteer’s independent
evaluations and advocacy help judges make the best decisions
needed to help keep the child safe. Texas CASA needs
volunteers from all over the state. Volunteers can come from
all walks of life. Substantial training is provided and
volunteers are never expected to place themselves in
dangerous situations. CASA volunteers offer children a
consistent, helping hand to guide them through the foster
care system to safe, permanent homes.
