Gilmer’s home-field advantage overtakes Atlanta Rabbits, 45-30

Atlanta Rabbits squeaked by Tatum

GILMER — The Atlanta Rabbits fell victim 45-30 to the tremendous home-field advantage of the Gilmer Buckeyes at Jeff Traylor Stadium Friday.

The Buckeyes turned over the Rabbs twice, including a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown, along with a kickoff return for a score to improve their record to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the 4A-2 Region II District 7. The Rabbs fall to 4-5 on the season and 1-3 in the district.

Atlanta out-gained Gilmer 537 to 369, though the Buckeyes held the edge with 23 first downs to Atlanta’s 17. The Rabbs produced 275 yards rushing on 48 carries, and completed 11-of-26 for 262 and two interceptions. Gilmer ran 38 times for 220, and the passing game netted 149 yards on 13-of-18.

The Red River Lumber Player of the Game was Demontrae Collins. Jawan King, who threw for a touchdown and ran for another, earned the Rushing Pest Control Player of the Game honors.

Atlanta finishes the season next Friday versus Spring Hill at Rabbits Stadium for homecoming. Bubba Kirkland and Rick Blackwood will have the call on KPYN 900 AM/95.5 FM with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and pregame at 6:30 p.m.
