Atlanta, Tx. — Atlanta splits double header with Pleasant Grove, Lady Rabbs beat previously (6-0) in district Pleasant Grove 70-60 and the Boys fall 74-49.
The Girl’s contest was tight through out. That is until The Lady Rabbs put 27 points up in the fourth quarter.
Teshuna Sheppard was a beast on the boards, but fouled out in fourth quarter. With Sheppard out the Lady Hawks had more shot opportunities late. Brittney Collins stepped in with Sheppard out and came away with multiple key rebounds and had a basket late in fourth quarter.
Sheveonia Smith didn’t play for much of the third quarter after comitting her third foul, but don’t tell that to her point total she finished with 23 (eight in fourth quarter) to lead the Lady Rabbs. Kaydee Kelly had the hot hand from 3-point land hitting a 3 in each quarter finishing with 13 points.
The heart award goes to freshman Keyona Easter who battled a wrist injury all night. Pleasant Grove’s press defense was especially physical for Easter’s point guard position. Easter had to go thru multiple defenders just to reach mid court on most possessions. The physicality became more and more as the clock ran down she never faltered and handled the ball very well.
Pleasant Grove Boy’s took control of game early leading 38-22 at halftime. Atlanta tried to battle back in the fourth quarter after trailing 67-34 to begin the final period.
Slayton Holland had two second half 3-pointers, Curtis Smith and Charlie Powell joined the 3 party in second half as well.
The Lady Rabbs improve to 4-3 in district play with win and boys fall to 0-5 with loss. Next up Liberty-Eylau comes to Atlanta for Girl’s and Boy’s varsity basketball Tuesday. KPYN will not broadcast game due to Texas A&M basketball. KPYN’s next broadcast will be girls/boys @ North Lamar Friday February 3rd.
