Queen City takes a bite of New Boston

By Jim Davenport

TEXARKANA — We got to see some bonus basketball tonight between the Queen City Bulldogs and New Boston Lions.  Both teams were tied for 2nd place in 14-3A district at 10-4, bragging rights and an opportunity to avoid Chapel Hill ( 2nd place in 13-3A ) in the 1st round of the playoffs.  The neutral site was set, Texas High, the 2 best referees from the district, Pippen and Jones and both teams with wins against each other at home, what else do you need?  How about a 2nd half of tonight’s ball game to settle things.

The 1st half resembled two heavyweight boxers feeling each other out before throwing the haymakers.  The 1st half was slow, physical and at times questionable from where I was sitting.  At one point, the team fouls were Queen City 11 and New Boston 3, and I’m not a “conspiracy theorist” but I caught myself wondering a few times.  New Boston jumped out to 10-1 lead before Queen City knew what hit them, then Coach Justin Burk called a timeout, and then the fun began.  Both teams would go on short runs, Queen City would get within 1, then New Boston would go on a 5 point run to extend the lead, after all of the runs and few defensive stops, the halftime score 23-23.
During the 3rd period, both teams took some big shots and made some great defensive plays, but New Boston had the lead by 4 as we began the 4th period.  In the middle of the 4th and final period, the score tied, Easton Fincher got a block shot on Dantray Copeland and that’s when the momentum shift took place for the Bulldogs.  Queen City went on a 7 point run and held onto to the lead with some clutch free throws from Tyler Nolan, Alex Carver, Austin Lowe and Josh Henry.  I also witnessed Josh Henry, the only senior for the Bulldogs, showing some senior leadership in a confrontation, the New Boston player was assessed a technical and Josh Henry kept his composure.
With this win, Queen City finishes the regular season 23-11 ( 11-5 ) and in second place for the 14-3A and will travel to Mt Pleasant on Tuesday, February 21st at 7 pm, pregame starts at 6:30 vs Prairiland Patriots from 13-3A.  You can listen to the game live on 105.3 KNCB, Caddo Country, The Bulldog Network or on our free download app FREED AM Sports.
